James Rigby 11691

James Rigby 11691
A Private with the Border Regiment
James Rigby of the 6th Bn. D Coy was killed in action in the Great War after the Landings at Suvla Bay, Gallipoli in Turkey on 09/08/1915.
James Rigby is my Great Grandfather on my father's side of the family.
General Hamilton with three more Allied Divisions, tried to outflank the Turks on Gallipoli with further landings on the 6th. These take place just to the north of Anzac Cove and the ANZAC forces, at Suvla Bay, with the aim of reaching Sair Bair. In the face of the Turkish Fifth Army, now 13 divisions strong, the attempt fails.
He is commemorated on the Helles Memorial Panel 119 to 125 or 222 and 223.James Rigby 11691

Driver Francis Robert Lowe 99690

Driver Francis Robert Lowe 99690
A Driver with the Royal Horse Artillery
Francis Lowe was a Driver with the Royal Horse Artillery who died in the Great War on 22/10/1916 and buried in Crecy-en-Ponthieu Communal Cemetery. This location is quite unusual as it is a communal cemetery and only contains two Commonwealth burials from the First World War.
By relation he is my Great-Grandfather and I have been gathering as much information as I can since the late 90's.

Guy Fawkes Night

Guy Fawkes Night
Guy Fawkes Night celebrations on the 5th of November
One of the best Guy Fawkes Night celebrations I've seen was in Lewes. There is a spectacular parade with some amazing costumes followed by several firework displays and bonfires.
This event not only marks the date of the uncovering of the Gunpowder Plot in 1605, but also commemorates the memory of the seventeen Protestant martyrs.
The current celebrations take the form of a series of torchlit processions through the town organised by the local bonfire societies, under the auspices of the Lewes Bonfire Council.
Each bonfire society has its own traditional costumes, ranging from Tudor dress to Mongol warriors. A number of large effigies are drawn though the streets. Effigies of Guy Fawkes and Pope Paul V, who became head of the Roman Catholic Church in 1605, feature every year. In addition, each of the five main local societies creates a topical 'tableau' and the Cliffe society displays on pikes the effigy heads of its current 'Enemies of Bonfire'.
To mark the demise of the 17 martyrs, 17 burning crosses are carried through the town, and a wreath-laying ceremony occurs at the War Memorial in the centre of town. A flaming tar barrel is also thrown into the river Ouse. The festivities culminate in five separate bonfire displays, where the effigies are destroyed by firework and flame.
Worth a visit one day!

Bonfire Prayers
Remember, remember the Fifth of November
The Gunpowder Treason and plot
I see no reason why Gunpowder Treason
Should ever be forgot

Guy Fawkes, Guy Fawkes 'twas his intent
To blow up the King and the Parliament
Three score barrels of powder below
Poor old England to overthrow

By God's providence he was catch'd
With a dark lantern and burning match
Holler boys, holler boys, ring bells ring
Holler boys, holler boys, God Save the King!

Body boarding kits for beginners

Bodyboarding Kits for Beginners
What's the basic kit required
I've been asked what's the minimum kit you need for bodyboarding, so here's my response.

Beginners Bodyboarding Kit
Absolute minimum kit
1 bodyboard!
PROS: The cheapest option if you get one for under £10.
CONS: You'll probably lose the board, get cold or it may even break in half!

Preferred minimum kit
1 bodyboard with leash
1 wetsuit short or long
PROS: You'll recover the bodyboard easily and you can stay in for hours.
CONS: Getting right out in the surf without fins is tough.

That's it! Have fun!
